U.S. Wine Consumption Continues to Climb

NORWALK, Conn., Aug. 22, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — A still-fragile U.S. economy continued its recovery as the wine industry maintained its upswing to mark the 18(th) year of growth. Consumer confidence and innovation by producers contributed to these gains. New varietals such as sweet reds and higher end blends have engaged consumers. According to the Beverage Information Group’s recently released 2012 Wine Handbook, wine consumption gained 3.0% to reach 312.4 million 9-liter cases in 2011.
Domestic wines continued to outpace imports. The U.S. has a reputation of being a better value than its imported counterparts, so wines from California, Oregon and Washington fared well in 2011. Imports did see some pockets of success, namely wines from Italy, Argentina and Spain. Millennial consumers are also helping the imported category due to their interest in lesser known varietals and willingness to experiment.
High-end varietals saw a significant boost this past year. With more confidence in the recovering economy, consumers are dining out more where higher priced offerings are in demand. Total wine dollar sales grew to $27.8 billion last year, with on-premise accounting for 43.8% — a 2.8% increase from 2010.
“As consumers discover new varietals, regions and price points, overall wine consumption is expected to continue to increase over the next five years,” according to Adam Rogers, senior research analyst for the Beverage Information Group based in Norwalk, Conn. “The wine industry is predicted to reach 317.3 million cases by 2012.”
The 2012 Wine Handbook is the leading source for U.S. wine sales and consumption trends. It includes wine consumption analysis; the top 50 metro markets; supplier performance; advertising expenditures; consumer drinking preferences; and economic/demographic data.
The cost of the 2012 Wine Handbook is $850; handbook with CD is $1,050. Shipping and handling is $15 for U.S. residents, $25 for all international orders. The handbook and CD can be purchased at www.bevinfostore.com or by calling Cynthia Porter at (630) 762-8709.

Wine Industry
MetricsDuring a recent talk in Napa, Karen Rice, the regional development director of Constant Contact, the popular email marketing service used by many small businesses including wineries, tried to simplify social media—and give some hints for using it. Her focus was Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, today’s most popular social media sites. “Start with Facebook,” she said, “71% of the U.S. population is using it.” One message that emerged from the talk, however, was that one force in the business, Facebook, is trying to supplant the Internet as we know it. It’s not just trying to connect friends and relatives but also creating an alternative to web pages, email and marketing. Rice, however, made a good argument for having the new media augment existing channels, not replace them. “Email marketing is the most vital medium out there,” she claimed. “People check their email first.” She started by pointing out that currently most sales come not from prospects but from existing customers, making that the logical place to focus sales efforts. Rice advised that winery marketing should connect with customers, prospects, suspects and what she called the “raving fans” common among small wineries. Don’t bother with the disinterested, she said. And don’t think the only people using social media are millennials with no money; almost 40% of Facebook users are age 35 or older. Wineries know that word of mouth is one of the most important influences for visits and sales. “Social media is word of mouth in the digital age,” Rice said. Today, only 14% of people trust ads, while 78% trust customer recommendations, according to a Nielsen Global Trust in Advertising Survey from 2007. Rice defines social media marketing as building a social network of fans, followers and connections using relevant and interesting content that allows businesses to reach and engage more people and drive more sales. Social media is also a good way to check up on competitors. But social media is more powerful when combined with email, as businesses have control over email but not social media. Constant Contact has found 14.4% in list growth using email and social media vs. 8.9% just using email. Lists grow to 53% larger using both, and emails get 5.7% higher click-through rates when both channels are used. The importance of Facebook Studies have shown that contacts prefer email for contacting suppliers in general, but Facebook is adding features to try to become a prime spot for business as well as individuals. Facebook has more than 800 million users. According to the 2011 Chadwick Martin Bailey Consumer Pulse, 52% of Americans spend at least one hour per week on Facebook, and 78% of fans like fewer than 10 brands. Of Facebook users, 77% read posts, news feeds and offers posted by businesses and 76% have never “un-liked” a brand. In addition, 56% are more likely to recommend and 51% more likely to buy a brand once they become a fan. Facebook has separated personal accounts from Pages, their business accounts. The difference: You have friends on personal accounts but “like” businesses. Companies can create home pages similar to web pages, but Facebook puts many restrictions on format and content. Facebook, in fact, is forcing businesses to migrate from personal to business pages. Users can sign up, engage in conversations, buy products and services, but businesses can’t get their contact information or use email. There are many legal restrictions on email not faced by Facebook, since users opt in. LinkedIn is business-oriented, and according to B to B Magazine 81% of business marketers have signed up and are using it. Though primarily a way to form connections—and perhaps look for work—it also includes business profiles Twitter, of course, is famous for its 140-character messages, and many businesses find it valuable for quick communication and building presence. The ideal is to have your messages “re-Tweeted” (forwarded) and to get replies. Content is king Whatever medium you use, however, Rice points out that content is king. “Users will tune out if you don’t have some to offer.” She suggests that you share information, tips and practical advice, use questions asked by your customers in creating content, hold contests for photos or videos, announce events and partner with a nonprofit for such activities. Most of all, join in a conversation. You can multiply your efforts in many ways: After sending an email newsletter, post a link to it on your social media site(s.) Repost comments and questions from one social media site to another. Find an interesting article elsewhere? Share a link to it on your social media page or in your newsletter. Make it even more compelling by sharing your quick thoughts on why you find it interesting. Turn comments and questions into newsletter content (just ask for permission before doing so.) Break your newsletter articles into separate tweets (i.e., separate out the “stories” into 140-character snippets.) Among the web links you might post are: • Polls and surveys • Event homepages and registration pages • Archived email marketing newsletters • Blogs (yours and others’) • Websites (yours, and others in your area of expertise) • Relevant videos, photos and podcasts She warns, however, not to pitch, overtly self-promote or offer incentives to get reviews or sharing. And avoid sharing personal information about politics, religion and other controversial subjects. Rice reminds you to include social medi a contacts in all promotion to make its especially valuable. Dealing with complaints One of the advantages of web pages is that you can control them. Since you can’t control comments on social sites, you may run into negative comments about your wine or winery. Rice says to respond quickly, reaching out to the customer privately and preferably by telephone, if not private email. “Always seek to satisfy and delight, not defend,” she warns. Business-oriented social media sites offer extensive monitoring tools, too, so you can track how you’re doing. Most of all, make all your efforts work together. Link and connect email, website, your blog, social media tools and newsletters. One concern for most busy marketers is how to find the time to accomplish what can seem daunting. According to Rice, most small businesses can get by with spending 15 minutes three times a week, but stay active and consistent. But be aware: Once you start, you must continue. Most of all, be sure to grab your handles on the various media before someone else does.
