Youth slam Aquino for pushing tuition increases

THE National Union of Students of the Philippines (NSUP)-Baguio/Benguet condemns the policies of the Aquino administration, which appears to encourage school administrations to hike tuition and other school fees.
Francis Lopez of NSUP-Baguio/Benguet said the Palace is deluding itself in saying plans to increase budget for basic education is “progressive”.
“What is progressive about further limiting access to tertiary education? What is progressive about a nominal and token budget increase for basic education?” Lopez said.
“This policy implies that state universities and colleges (SUCs) will face another round of budget cuts next year and it also implies that the (Aquino) administration itself is pushing for SUCs to increase current school fees and add more school fees,” he added.
The youth leader said the Palace was not listening to the gripes of student groups and SUC administrators when it unequivocally called for greater state subsidy.
“In the past school years, schools are already raising and adding fees in order to make up for budget cuts; and here comes the President leading another round of increases. He is unquestionably adding another burden for Filipinos,” he said.
Lopez dared the President to live the life of an ordinary Filipino and asked, “What does a privileged haciendero know of stretching an already stretched budget? What does a private-school bred man know of public-school woes? We challenge him to live as an ‘iskolar ng bayan’ and let’s see how he quickly changes his mind about policies like this.”
In the meantime, NUSP with other youth organizations launched the 100,000 Signature Campaign to Oppose Budget Cuts last September, which aims to gather signatures in opposition to budget cuts in education and social services, to be presented at the Congress and Senate budget deliberations.
