Using a local variety called Mencia, the wines of Bierzo are steadily improving the quality of their wines, so much so, that they are beginning to make a name for the region as a source of good value, good quality wines comparable (arguably) to some Rioja and Ribera del Duero wines. American oak provides coconut and dill aromas and flavors to the bramble fruit of this wine.The grape itself was once known as a “Beaujolais alternative” made to be drunk young but the Bierzo wines are made for cellaring and aging.
