Champagne is only Champagne if originating from the Champagne Ardenne. Within the Champagne region Champagne lovers make a distinction between the following areas:
* La montagne de Reims (Marne, mainly Pinot Noire)
* La Valée de la Marne (Marne et Aisne)
* La Côte des Blancs (Marne. Mainly Chardonay)
* La Côte des Bar (Aube near Troyes).
A number of organisations (amongst which the Champagne Information Bureau, CIVC) prefers to use a more geographical subdivision like Aisne, Marne and Aube. The cultivated area of the vineyards is stated in the following schedule:
Province # Hectares
Aisne et la Seine et Marne 2.053
Aube et la Haute-Marne 5.823
Marne 22.271
Total 30.147
The Marne is the Province with the largest surface of vineyards. Hence the fact that the majority of the producers are to be found around Reims and Epernay
