Wine grapes are ripening earlier and new research shows it’s not just due to warmer temperatures.
The shift isn’t good, because when grapes ripen the quality is altered, and vintage can be difficult to manage.
In a comprehensive, long term study, Dr Leanne Webb at the University of Melbourne and CSIRO has found earlier ripening is caused by three factors equally.
She says vines are being pruned harder to produce premium wine, the soil has been drier in the drought, and the temperature has warmed over 50 years.
Dr Webb says the first two of those factors can be adjusted to lengthen the ripening time again.
“If we think we can manage the timing of maturity to try to reverse this shift to early ripening or at least slow this shift, it would be advantageous to winegrape growers.”
It’s the most extensive study of its kind.
Viticulture researcher Dr Leanne Webb has found early ripening in 43 our of 44 vineyards southern Australia from Victoria to Wesern Australia, early ripening could be due to 3 equally important reasons – soil moisture, heavier pruning to get a lighter crop and warmer weather.
At Mt Majura Frank Van derLoo has already insuring against warming, planting grapes that take longer to ripen.
Dr Webb delivered the findings to the Climate Change Conference in Cairns, ahead of publication in the Global Change Biology paper later this month.
