University prexy candidates vow transparency

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – The four candidates for Benguet State University (BSU) president vowed transparency in administration during Wednesday’s open forum at the BSU’s College of Teacher Education Function hall.
The candidates are Dr. Silvestre Aben, Dr. Feliciano Calora, Dr. Ben Ladilad and Dr. Janet Luis.
The Commission on Higher Education (Ched)-Bicol Region director Freddi Bernal, member of the search committee for the position, said there were six applicants but only four qualified.
Aben is a faculty member of BSU College of Teacher Education. He envisions BSU to be a recognized school in the international academe.
His mission is geared towards the rationalization of BSU services and the full implementation of its policies, relying strictly on the BSU code in partnership with other government institutions, agencies, local government units, business sectors and communities, farmers, neighboring provinces, Cordillera region and the country in general.
“I wanted to implement my ‘student first policy’ to bring quality service to the students. But we must develop our faculty in molding the students’ wholesome development,” said Aben.
Calora is the director of the Planning and Development Office of BSU. He is a certified forester with a degree of Doctor in Philosophy at the University of the Philippines Los Baños.
He foresees BSU in the next decade as an international teaching and research university recognized for the quality of its curricular programs and effectiveness of its research, outreach programs and agribusiness ventures with broad access provided through the innovative use of information technology.
“I want to expand national and international alliance which will create opportunities for advance studies, researches, community services and agribusinesses to support the university’s mandate of providing quality education for our students and other clientele,” said Calora.
Both Aben and Calora identified transparency as one of their core values. They said they will be upholding the principle of honesty and integrity.
Ladilad is the regional director of the Department of Science and Technology. He envisions BSU to be the leading institution for the attainment of regional and national self-sufficiency and economic development.
Lone lady candidate Luis is a licensed agriculturist and the present Director for Research of BSU. She wants to uphold the prevailing BSU vision, which is to become a premier state university in Southeast Asia.
She plans to develop people equipped with knowledge, technologies, special skills and values for the welfare of human and environment.
The candidates identified land titling as the urgent problem of the university. Most of the lots acquired by the school were through Presidential Proclamations. Now complaints are arising regarding the BSU lots.
Meanwhile, teachers and students are asking the search committee for their participation in the selection process but committee chairperson Dr. Lauro Tacbas said they do not have the authority to act on the query.
It is the board of Ched that has the authority to allow or disapprove the concern of the teachers and students, Tacbas said.
Tacbas, however, assured the public to be transparent as regards the selection process and its results.(Rubyloida Bitog)
