UNA gets Comelec’s nod

THE United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) has managed to get the approval of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to become an official political coalition in the coming May 2013 national and local polls.
“Wherefore, the Comelec First Division resolves to grant the petition for registration and accreditation of the United Nationalist Alliance as a political coalition for purposes of the May 13, 2013 National and Local Elections,” said the resolution of the Comelec First Division.
It noted that the UNA, a coalition of Partido Demokratiko Pilipino Lakas ng Bayan (PDP Laban) and Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PNP), was able to meet all the necessary requirements as provided for in the Omnibus Election Code and the Comelec Rules of Procedure.

“UNA possesses all the qualifications and none of the disqualifications under the law,” said the resolution.

Among these requirements are having a principal headquarters; the two parties (PDP Laban and PMP) have been previously granted registration by the poll body separately; are bound by a common platform of government; is not a religious sect; does not advocate violence or unlawful means; not an organization funded by the government; does not accept financial contribution from foreign entities; and upholds the Constitution and all laws.

“Gauging from the guidelines enumerated and taking into consideration the contents of their petition… it so holds that UNA has successfully complied with the requirements for registration of political parties, or coalition of political parties,” added the Comelec.

It was last March when the UNA leadership sought accreditation from the Comelec.

At present, Senator Koko Pimentel, who is the president of PDP Laban, continues to oppose the inclusion of former senator Juan Miguel Zubiri, who is nominated by PMP, in the senatorial slate of UNA in the 2013 polls.

This, despite the attempts to unite them by UNA leaders such as former President Joseph Estrada, Vice President Jejomar Binay, and Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile.
