Traffic rerouted for INC rally

MANILA, Philippines – Thousands of Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) faithful are expected to attend a grand prayer rally at the Quirino Grandstand tomorrow.
The Manila City government yesterday released a traffic advisory in preparation for the “Iglesia ni Cristo Grand Evangelical Mission” prayer rally where police estimate a huge crowd to converge in Rizal Park for the 5 p.m. event.
Katigbak Drive, South Drive and Independence Road will be closed to vehicular traffic starting at 12 noon.
Parking areas for VIP will be at the north wing of Quirino Grandstand (fronting the Police Community Precinct).
For those with car pass, parking will be at the South Drive from Roxas Blvd. to Independence Road.
Parking lot for buses would be at one lane from the stretch of Roxas Boulevard from P. Burgos to P. Ocampo.
From the stretch of Bonifacio Drive north and southbound lane from 25th Street to Anda Circle, there will be one lane only.
Parking areas are also designated at the PICC complex and Paco Park.
For light vehicles, one lane of T.M. Kalaw, east and westbound near the sidewalk from Roxas Boulevard to Ma. Orosa.
Heavy traffic will also be expected along Roxas Boulevard service road from T.M. Kalaw to P. Ocampo, eastbound of P. Burgos over the sidewalk from Roxas Boulevard to Ma. Orosa, northbound lane of Bonifacio Drive over the sidewalk from 25th St. to Anda Circle.
For motorcycles, parking will be at Bonifacio Drive Service Road.
Drop off point of participants will be from Roxas Boulevard southbound fronting carabao statue at the Luneta.
Jones Bridge Magallanes, however, will be open to traffic.
All motorists are advised to take alternate routes.
They are advised to take President Quirino to Nagtahan or Taft Avenue to Jones, MacArthur and Quezon bridges.
More than 1,000 policemen will be deployed to secure the prayer rally, National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) chief Director Alan Purisima said.
Manila Police District (MPD) director Chief Superintendent Alex Gutierrez added some policemen would be deployed with the task of guarding the rally site against criminal elements who might take advantage of the situation to sow disorder.
Gutierrez said the Manila city government under Mayor Alfredo Lim has also ordered the deployment of ambulances for first aid and other cases of medical emergency.
Lim also ordered the Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau to make sure the service road near Luneta will be made available for parking free of charge.
Purisima, on the other hand, gave assurance there were no intelligence reports of any threat group out to sabotage the rally.
“The number of policemen to be deployed would be decreased or increased depending on the situation on the ground,” Purisima said.
He said anti-riot policemen at the NCRPO and the five police districts will be placed on standby.
Purisima said the NCRPO today will inspect the rally site to secure the area against bombs and explosives.
Though there is no threat to the event, Purisima is closely coordinating with rally organizers to assess the peace and order situation at the site.
“They can always call us for help when the need arises and we are very willing to oblige,” Purisima said.
“They are also citizens of the republic and it is our mandate to secure them whether they requested for it or not,” he added.
Purisima gave assurance that there would be police visibility and more foot and mobile patrols at the rally site and its surroundings come Tuesday.
Purisima said INC officials assured him that the rally, dubbed as “Pamamahayag,” is not a political one but a process of recruiting new members, which is being done on a yearly basis.
However, there were some who believed that the INC rally was meant to express support for impeached Chief Justice Renato Corona.
There are reports that sacked National Bureau of Investigation director Magtanggol Gatdula has signified intention to join the rally. Gatdula is an INC member.
