The Hospices de Beaune, also known as the Hôtel-Dieu, is a prestigious historical monument. Each year, more than 400,000 tourists visit the Hôtel-Dieu, which today covers a large area of Beaune, with its museum, three courtyards, outbuildings, 15th century bastion and hundreds of metres of cellars which contain, notably, the personal reserve of the Hospices. Four buildings are open to the public, around the honour courtyard; they represent the Hôtel-Dieu of former times. Prices to visit are €6.50 per adult, with concessions for students, large families, groups and young people; children under 10 and the disabled have free entry. Open all year round.
The creation of the Hospices de Beaune
The creation of the Hospices de Beaune emanated from a particular historical context. Its founders gave the institution a vocation which still is present today through its various activities.
The Hôtel-Dieu was founded on 4 August 1443, when Burgundy was ruled by Duke Philip the Good (Philippe le Bon). The Hundred Years War had recently been brought to a close by the signing of the Treaty of Arras in 1435. The majority of the people of Beaune were declared destitute.
Nicolas Rolin, the Duke’s Chancellor, and his wife Guigone de Salins, reacted by deciding to create a hospital and refuge for the poor. The hospital (known as the Hôtel-Dieu) received its first patient on 1st January 1452. Elderly, disabled and sick people, orphans, women about to give birth and the destitute have all been welcomed here for treatment and refuge, without interruption from the Middle Ages until the present day.
Over the centuries, the hospital radiated outwards, grouping with similar establishments in Pommard, Nolay, Meursault and Beaune (the Hospices de la Charité). It became a community of carers, known as the Hospices de Beaune.
Rooms for Receptions and seminaries
• The medieval Bastion : This space can be used to organise receptions, conferences, conference-meals and exhibitions. It is the traditional setting for the gala dinner which closes the famous Hospices de Beaune wine auction. The medieval BastionIt is also used for national and international events, and has even served as a television studio. It can accommodate 368 people seated and 500 standing. The walls are in stone and the ceilings are high and vaulted. Four arches punctuate the length of the hall. The rich, ancient tapestries (17th and 18th century) belonging to the museum are placed at your disposal to embellish the setting of your events, adding a note of colour and prestige.
• The Chamber of the King : Prestigious reception room of 100 m², the Chamber of the King completes the Jean Latour conference centre. It can accommodate 100 people for cocktails or banquets. The Chamber of the King is the object of a rent complementary or independent from that of the center of seminaries.
