Sun.Star covers live Cesafi semis as UV eyes perfect 7 today

CEBU CITY — A well-rested University of the Visayas (UV) and Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu will start their bids to nab a finals seat as the semifinal round of the 2012 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) basketball tournament starts today, Tuesday, at the Cebu Coliseum.
Sun.Star, at www.sunstar.com.ph, will bring you the action live as it happens on the hard court starting at 5 p.m. with the Magis Eagles, who have been denied the Cesafi high school title for two years in a row, playing against the no. 5 finishers and former champions Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons.

Also watch the UV Green Lancers, as they start their bid against defending champions University of Cebu Webmasters in the main game at 6:15 p.m.
UV, which topped the elimination round, is carrying an unblemished 6-0 win-loss slate from the elimination, which includes a win over the Webmasters, 86-80, last August 23, and is highly favored to win this match.
The Lancers waylaid the unsuspecting Royal Mandaya Hotel, the champion of the Kadayawan Basketball title in Davao City, in an exhibition game last September 1. Royal Mandaya is manned by former PBA players.
However, with the way the Webmasters are improving in each game, the Lancers are expecting a tough challenge.
In their elimination round victory, the Lancers needed the late-game heroics of Emmanuel Calo before securing the victory.
Tactics
Coach Donbel Belano is expecting his 6’8” Cameroonian center Steve Cedrick Akomo to dominate the game along with his prized rookie Wowie Escocio and the all-around Jerome Silva.
UC, on the other hand, has nothing to lose in this match.
Quinton Brian Heruela is again expected to lead the Webmasters as Coach Roehl Gomez has been utilizing the brawny point guard in all positions, even fielding him as center.
The Dragons, meanwhile, are expected to deliver what was lacking when they first met the Eagles last Aug. 10, where the Eagles pulled a 71-61 victory.
After surviving a grueling quarterfinal match against no. 4 University of San Carlos, the Dragons’ confidence has been boosted and they will shoot for an early lead in the high school division.
The semifinal is a single-round-robin affair with the top two teams advancing to the best-of-five championship series.
The bottom two teams, however, will vie for the number three spot in a best-of-three contest.

Aside from Tuesday’s games, Sun.Star will also cover live other semi-final Cesafi matches, including the matchup between the UV Baby Lancers and the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildkittens in the high school division at 5 p.m. of September 13, Thursday.
Also catch the University of San Jose Recolletos (USJ-R) Jaguars as they face off with the Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras in the collegiate division at 6:45 p.m. also on Thursday.
