SMC joins ‘unli’ broadband war

A TELECOM unit of the San Miguel group has raised the ante in an ongoing war for broadband services among telecom companies as it offered unlimited Internet without data caps.

In a briefing, Edmun Pike, wi-tribe Telecoms Inc. said its broadband Internet service is 100 percent 4G (fourth generation) technology using WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) services.

4G is the latest generation wireless data network technology that delivers speeds of up to three times faster than 3G.

“While other networks utilize both 2G and 3G technologies . . . Wi-Tribe’s network is specifically built for data traffic and doesn’t have to carry other services such as voice and SMS,” Pike said.

For P598, a subscriber can avail of unlimited Internet for a speed of 512 kilobytes per second (kbps); for P998, 1 megabytes per second (Mbps); and P2 Mbps, for P1998.
Pike said Wi-Tribe also removed its data caps in a bid to offer the best value broadband Internet services in the market.

Simon Burckhardt, Wi-Tribe chief commercial adviser, however, said the company will introduce a fair use policy to manage its network.

“We want to have a fair use policy . . . It’s better for the majority of the subscribers to have a fair use policy,” Burckhardt said.

Prior to the removal of data caps, Wi-Tribe imposed a cap of between 1 and 12 gigabytes (Gb).

The Wi-Tribe executive said 5 percent of its existing subscribers abuse their network.
At present, Wi-Tribe’s 4G subscribers stood at 48,000, but the telco expects to double it this year.

Burckhardt said Wi-Tribe plans to expand its services beyond Metro Manila. “It’s a huge potential for Metro Manila.

There’s a lot of people,” he added.
The company plans to spend $40 million this year to install 200 more cell sites in Metro Manila from the existing 400 base stations.

Wi-Tribe is a unit of Liberty Telecom Holdings Inc., which recorded a net loss of P346 million in the first quarter, or 79.9 percent wider than the P192.5 million in the same period last year.

San Miguel Corp. owns 41.48 percent of Liberty, while Qatar-based telco Qtel also has a 27.12-percent stake in the company.
