Senator warns of unrest in aftermath of priest’s murder

THE murder of Fr. Fausto Tentorio, shot inside a church in North Cotabato earlier this week, could spread unrest to other mining towns, Senator Teofisto Guingona III warned Wednesday.
Guingona said protest actions against mining could intensify if it is found that Tentorio was murdered for his stand against mining and for the rights of indigenous peoples.
The Italian priest was gunned down by a lone assassin inside the Mother of Perpetual Help Church in Arakan town, North Cotabato on Monday.
“The heightened protest against mining will cause civil unrest and protests not only in mining-affected provinces but even in far-flung areas outside Metro Manila,” a statement from his office read.
He called on the police, who have already formed a task force to investigate the crime, to “find those responsible for this cowardly crime.”
Guingona, chairman of the Senate Committee on Peace, Unification, and Reconciliation, warned police that if they fail to act quickly to bring Tentorio’s killers before the bar of justice, “this uprising of concerned civil societies and indigenous people will continue, to the detriment of peace and order.”
“I am saddened with his untimely demise. It’s another attempt to silence the growing resistance of the Church and the indigenous peoples’ groups against large-scale mining. His killer must pay,” the senator from Bukidnon said.
Senator Loren Legarda, chair of the Senate committee on cultural communities, also demanded justice for the Italian priest.
“I condemn this act of violence against a selfless man of God, a public servant who gave his heart to the Filipino people. The death of Fr. Pops (Tentorio’s nickname) is not just a loss to the indigenous community and the poor but to humanity as well,” she said.
She urged police to bring the “perpetrators of this dastardly act before the law and bring justice, not only to the servants of humanity, but also to the people who are gravely affected by the tragic death of their hero.”
Philippine National Police spokesman Agrimero Cruz on Tuesday said Tentorio’s anti-mining advocacy is just one angle that police are investigating. “It’s too early to rule out (other) possible motives,” he said.
Chief Superintendent Lester Camba, head of the task force, said the police are still validating reports of death threats that Tentorio received before he was killed.
On Tuesday, Senator Aquilino Pimentel III of Cagayan de Oro City, warned against blaming “any ethnic group or sector of our society (for the murder) without any adequate proof as that would only exacerbate things.” (Jonathan de Santos/Sunnex)
