Senator supports decision to deny Arroyo travel request
Friday, November 4, 2011
SENATOR Francis Pangilinan, an ally of the Aquino administration, has thrown his support behind a Justice department decision to deny Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo permission to leave the country for medical treatment.
“I think the former President should explain why she will travel to four countries when they say her health is poor,” Pangilinan said in a press statement Friday.
Arroyo, who has been disgnosed with hypoparathyroidism, has been cleared for travel by her doctors but needs authorization from the Department of Justice before she can leave the country.
Justice Secretary Leila De Lima has denied her request for an Allow-Departure Order saying there is no immediate need for the former President to seek medical treatment abroad.
Arroyo, her husband Jose Miguel, and others have been placed on a government watchlist because of accusations of plunder and electoral
sabotage. Senator Aquilino Pimentel III, who was cheated in the 2007 elections, is the complainant in one of those charges.
Senator Panfilo Lacson, also an administration ally, has also voiced doubts that Arroyo wants to leave the country to seek medical treatment.
In a press statement Thursday, Lacson cited the inclusion of Remedios Poblador “Arroyo’s erstwhile secretary for ‘special concerns,’ as one of her entourage abroad.” Lacson said Poblador “gained controversy” for allegedly offering former Armed Forces of the Philippines technical sergeant Vidal Doble Jr. money to refuse to testify in Congressional hearings on the “Hello, Garci” scandal.
“She also dispatched a government helicopter to bring then Balanga Bishop Socrates Villegas to ‘rescue’ Doble from the San Carlos Seminary in Makati City at the height of the ‘Garci’ scandal in 2005,” Lacson added.
“Isn’t it suspicious that instead of strictly family members, it seems that she’s bringing with her the whole ‘secretariat?'” the senator said.
Lacson also doubts Arroyo for not giving details on the medical treatment she will seek abroad. “She could not give details of the doctors she will consult with. What makes this more fishy is that of the 14 people in her entourage, most of them are aides,” he said.
The senator added most of the countries Arroyo has asked for permission to visit have no extradition treaties with the Philippines.
Bishops support Arroyo travel request
In a separate report, a bishop has expressed sentiments contrary to those aired by the two senators.
Bishop Deogracias Iniguez, chairman of the Public Affairs Committee of the CBCP, said Arroyo should be allowed to go abroad, especially if the needed treatment is not locally available.
However, he said that she should promise to return after the treatment to erase speculation that she is only using her medical condition to evade criminal prosecution.
“There should be guarantee of her return,” the Kalookan bishop said.
Likewise, Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz supports Iniguez statement.
“If her sickness becomes fatal, the (Leila) De Lima gets all the blame and GMA becomes some kind of a martyr,” he said. “If she does not come back, then her flight is a sign of guilt,” Cruz said. (Jonathan de Santos/FP/Sunnex)
