Pursuit operations vs Sayyafs to continue despite Ramadan
Saturday, July 30, 2011
MANILA — The government vowed Saturday to continue pursuit operations against Abu Sayyaf bandits despite the start of Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting, next week.
“The President’s instructions were very clear that operations will not stop, but again we understand that there is the traditional Ramadan. I think that is something the leadership has to take up with the President…,” said deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte.
President Benigno Aquino III sent Friday a strong message to the Abu Sayyaf bandits who beheaded two of the seven Marine troopers killed in a clash in Sulu province on Thursday.
“Mark my words: to those of you who perpetrated this atrocity, know that you are now number one on my radar…You will be brought to justice to answer for your crimes,” he said.
“I condemn these atrocities that are meant to put pressure on the peace process – to derail our efforts to counteract the causes of banditry, rebellion, and terrorism. Let me be very clear: those who want neither peace nor progress are the ones who perpetrated this dastardly act,” the President added.
Navy spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Omar Tonsay confirmed Friday that two other slain Marines suffered severe hack wounds during Thursday afternoon’s gunbattle with the al-Qaeda-linked bandit group.
With this, Valte said the President instructed Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin to ensure that the Abu Sayyafs responsible for the crime are brought to justice, adding assistance will be given to the families of the fallen soldiers.
The pursuit operations will continue despite the Ramadan, which is set to start Monday, August 1, Valte said.
The clash in Patikul town, Sulu also prompted the government to double efforts to attain peace in Mindanao.
The government, under the Aquino administration, has pursued peace talks with several rebel groups in Mindanao since last year.
Valte explained that the administration is targeting to end the banditry through efforts to attain peace and provide livelihood for those who have engaged in rebellious acts against the government.
“If we enter into a lasting and sustainable peace, if we achieve that, makakapasok yung progreso, yung investments at makakagalaw tayo dyan as such pag nagtuloy-tuloy yung progreso, they will see no need for banditry,” she added.
President Aquino, together with Vice President Jejomar Binay, condoled Saturday afternoon with the bereaved families of the seven fallen soldiers at the Villamor Air Base in Pasay City.
Many of the grieving relatives passed out at the sight of the bodies of their loved ones who were transported from
Zamboanga City to Manila Saturday.
A Philippine Air Force (PAF) C-130 aircraft bearing the remains of the soldiers arrived at the Villamor Air Base at 3 p.m.
Philippine Marines and Navy contingents rendered full arrival honors to their dead comrades.
The remains were brought to the St. Peter’s Funeral Chapel in Roxas District, Quezon City Saturday afternoon and will be transferred to the Philippine Marines headquarters at Fort Bonifacio in Taguig City on Sunday, before they will be brought to their respective hometowns for burial.
