Peña: Bugs in my Bumper
June 3, 2011
TAKING advantage of the last few days of school vacation, I took my family to Antipolo and Manila last Monday. It was already dark when we headed for home. The following morning, I noticed hundreds of dead insects, big and small, stuck in my car’s bumper. It will be an agonizing cleanup again, I told myself.
This “dead-bugs-on-my-bumper” problem happened to me countless times already. And this phenomenon is not unique to the Philippines. It happens everywhere. I can tell because there are several ‘car-care’ products that are specifically formulated to remove bugs.
So why are insects crashing head-on with cars during nighttime? Here’s the answer from allabout.com – “Night flying insects evolved to navigate by the light of the moon. By keeping the moon’s reflected light at a constant angle, the insects can maintain a steady flight path and a straight course. Artificial lights interfere with an insect’s ability to detect the moonlight. They appear brighter, and radiate their light in multiple directions. Once an insect flies close enough to a light bulb, it attempts to navigate by way of the artificial light, rather than the moon.”
This explains why insects fly towards headlights and meet their end in the bumpers of fast moving cars. It’s an example of how modern living has disrupted the natural environment.
Some scientists believe light pollution is leading to a decline in certain insects. Fireflies for example, have difficulty identifying the flashes of other fireflies where artificial lights are present.
But who cares about insects? Well, they are critical to ecological balance. Aside from eating pests that are harmful to plants, insects get eaten themselves by larger creatures like frogs and bats. So the decline in the number of insects will trigger the demise of other species in the food chain.
The losses of insects have other adverse effects too. According to an article written in ENN.COM, research is showing that night-time light can alter human and insect behavior and can lead to an increase in the transmission of insect-borne diseases.
Altering human and insect interactions is one example of how light pollution may be changing disease risk patterns. Many potentially fatal or disfiguring tropical diseases are caused by parasites that are transmitted to humans by the bite of a specific insect carrier. For example, kissing bugs carry Chagas’ disease, mosquitoes bring malaria and sand flies transmit leishmaniasis. Biting often occurs at night.
And it’s not only in the lighted highways that insects get disoriented. Artificial lights in our homes and offices have the same effect on insects. Notice how insects swarm around light bulbs, lamps and candles.
I’m interested to know how scientists will address this concern.
