Pampangeños urged to pray for ex-President

By Charlene Cayabyab
Tuesday, August 2, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Governor Lilia Pineda appealed to her constituents during her State of the Province Address (Sopa) Monday to pray for former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s speedy recovery.
Pineda’s statement came on the heels of the barrage of charges being hurled against Pampanga second district Congresswoman Arroyo, who is now recuperating at St. Luke’s Hospital in Manila after a surgery last Friday.
“Hindi gano’n kaganda ang kanyang (Arroyo) sitwasyon. Sana tulungan natin siyang magdasal sa mga issues sa kanya (She’s in a bad condition. Let’s help her pray so she could face these issues against her),” Pineda said in between sobs.
In an interview after her Sopa, Pineda said chiefs of government agencies during the Arroyo administration should also help the former President answer corruption inquiries, especially if it involves their agency.
Pineda admitted that issues thrown at Arroyo now are “frightening.”
“Nakakatakot ang nangyari sa former President dahil hindi lahat ay nagging loyal at sumuporta sa kanya (What’s happening to her is frightening because not all of her loyalists are supporting her),” Pineda said.
Pineda also noted that Representative Arroyo initiated numerous projects and assistance in the province, especially for the victims of the Mt. Pinatubo eruption.
Pineda is a known political ally and close friend of the former President.
The spectators of the Pineda’s Sopa also offered a minute of silent prayer for Arroyo.
Meanwhile, the governor also asked for the full support of Capitol employees in her next two years of office to assure the delivery of basic social services and projects of the Provincial Government.
In a separate interview, Vice Governor Joseller Guaio said they will support the governor and her projects. Guaio was also thankful that Pineda recognized his efforts and contributions in carrying out provincial projects.
“There’s no fanfare here. The governor is able to make Capitol officials cooperative so everyone is working and is supporting her,” Guiao said.
Achievements
During her Sopa, Pineda bared that on her first year in office as provincial chief executive, she achieved developments and improvements for the province in terms of health and sanitation programs as well as tourism.
Fourth district Board Member Nestor Tolentino lauded Pineda’s program aimed at rehabilitating the various district hospitals here that are in “varying stages of neglect.”
Tolentino said the province’s district hospitals now enjoy better funding and support through Pineda’s various construction and development programs.
Tolentino added that Pineda has also started on the plans to create a potential tourism destination through the development of the Pampanga River boat route. He said that studies are now being undertaken on the said proposal.
Aside from the river tour, Pineda had also opened the new route from Porac town leading to Mt. Pinatubo Crater Lake for tourists coming from Pampanga and other neighboring provinces.
The Nabuklod and Inararo highlands were also opened as tourism destinations for eco-tourism enthusiasts and tourism adventurers. The Lubao-Samuan wetland tour was also inaugurated through the recent visit of foreign ambassadors.
“In general, I believe the governor will get a passing mark from the people of the province,” Tolentino said.
