Palace satisfied with Armm voters’ registration result

MALACANANG commended Thursday the Commission on Elections (Comelec) and other groups involved in the successful conduct of general voters’ registration in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm).
Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said the Palace is optimistic that the Armm will have clean and fair elections in 2013 as a result of the “cleansing” of the voters’ list.
“Today marks the end of the voter re-registration by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in the Autonomous Region for Muslim Mindanao (Armm). We commend the individuals and groups that came together and helped ensure the success of the reform initiative, most especially our uniformed personnel who kept the peace during the 10-day period,” he said.
Despite reports of irregularities, Lacierda said the Comelec has been able to reduce the number of registered voters in the Armm from 1.8 million to only 1.2 million, “a significant reduction that will more faithfully represent the democratic principle of one person, one vote.”
He said the pursuit of genuine electoral reform within Armm binds the Aquino administration and its allies in both houses of Congress.
“With our continued solidarity, our resolve, and the participation of our countrymen, Armm will succeed in attaining enduring reform in governance — where its leaders have clear and convincing mandates through clean and fair elections,” he added.
Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes earlier said that the general voter’s registration was “generally peaceful.”
He admitted that there were incidents of violence in some precincts but the commission considered them as isolated cases.
He said there were about 50,000 minors registered to vote in Armm but they will be removed from the master list and will not be allowed to vote. Double registrants will also be removed from list.
After the post-verification process, the Comelec expects the master list to go down to 1.2 million from 1.8 million.
President Benigno Aquino III earlier ordered the cleanup of Armm voters’ list, which is believed to be filled with voters who were underage, deceased, and registered in multiple areas.
