Palace: Marcos burial a settled issue

MALACANANG considered the issue on the burial of late strongman Ferdinand Marcos as settled after the Marcos family reportedly refused to appeal the decision of President Benigno Aquino III.
In a press briefing Friday, presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said the Palace is “glad” to hear the decision of the Marcoses, adding that burial of their patriarch is now a “family matter”.
“It’s considered a settled issue and with the President already spoken. We are glad. We know that it is not something that the Marcos family would welcome but at least, they decided not to question the decision of the President,” he said.
Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos earlier said they will not appeal Aquino’s decision to deny state honors for her father, noting that they will just take their chances with the next administration.
Imee admitted that they were surprised by the decision of the President as they believed that Aquino will not miss the opportunity to reconcile with the Marcoses.
She also said they already agreed to the recommendation of Vice President Jejomar Binay to bury the remains of her father in their home province in Ilocos Norte but with full military honors.
The Marcos family has been appealing for their patriarch to be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani as privileged for being a former President and a soldier.
Lacierda said the Palace will leave it to the Marcos family if they decided to bury the late dictator.
“It’s up to them. It is now a family matter. As far as the government is concerned, the government is only concerned with the issue on state honors and state burial. So that has been settled,” he stressed.
Asked if the government will not force the Marcoses to apologize to the human rights victims during the Martial law years, he said “the onus is on them whether they want to apologize, let them decide or acknowledge the existence of human rights violations.”
President Aquino earlier rejected the proposal for the late strongman to be given state honors, saying the victims of the dictatorial regime of Marcos have yet to be accorded any apology or compensation. (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
