Over 70 families told to leave City Hall property
AT LEAST 72 families living in Barangay Tejero could end up homeless during the holidays, after the Cebu City Government ordered them to vacate the lots they are occupying before the month ends.
Through the Squatters Prevention, Elimination and Encroachment Division (Speed), City Hall gave the families a final notice to vacate. They were given until the end of December to remove their structures from the City-owned property.
Speed Chief Noel Artes said their houses will have to be removed to make way for the widening of U. Alviola St., an interior road in Tejero.
“They have to leave so we can restore the road. Besides, it’s a government lot,” Artes said.
When he learned that his constituents were given a final notice to vacate, Tejero Barangay Councilor and Acting Barangay Captain Garry Lao said he will ask the City to postpone the road restoration.
He believes the City should give the families a chance to celebrate Christmas “peacefully and merrily.”
“Luoy sad baya sila (They are unfortunate),” said Lao, who is acting village chief while Barangay Captain Jessielou Cadungog is on leave.
Mayor Michael Rama has ordered the widening of U. Alviola St. so fire trucks and ambulances can proceed with ease during a fire or other emergency situations.
Last July, a fire hit Tejero and left some 190 families or 1,200 individuals homeless.
It took the firefighters at least two hours to put out the flames because the drivers of fire trucks had a hard time getting to the fire scene due to the narrow road.
At present, U. Alviola St. is only seven meters wide and cannot accommodate two fire trucks.
The City wants to restore the original width of the road, which was 10 meters.
Tejero officials have been opposing the City’s move to fully restore the road in the village because several families would be displaced. Also, the City has not yet identified a temporary relocation site for the affected families.
For his part, Rama said he is determined to restore the 10-meter road in Tejero before another fire hits the barangay. He said the risks of fire should not be taken for granted.
In an interview yesterday, Artes said the families who will be affected by the road restoration already gave him a proposal for an alternative road.
“Ilang ipaliko ang dan (They want to divert the road),” he said.
The residents told him that if the road is diverted, fewer families will be displaced.
They estimated that only 30 families will have to be evicted, instead of 72 families.
But Artes said he is not convinced by the residents’ proposal because it is not supported by any technical study.
“Di ko kasabot sa ilang plano kay way klaro (I don’t understand their proposal),” he said.
Artes said he will meet the residents later this week to explain to them again why the
City needs to restore Tejero’s interior road.
