Oil prices hiked again

OIL firms raised pump prices again as petroleum prices abroad continued to rise.

In a text message on Wednesday afternoon, Total Philippines Corp. announced an increase of P0.50 per liter across all pump products.

The price adjustment took effect 12:01 a.m., Thursday.

Prior to Total’s price hike, oil firms Eastern Petroleum Corp. and Phoenix Petroleum Philippines Inc. raised the price of their fuel products by the same amount, 12:01 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., Wednesday.

Other oil companies are yet to announce if they will also adjust their prices accordingly.

In the past, however, petroleum firms generally followed each other’s adjustments.

The recent price hike implemented by the oil companies was the eighth for the year.

Petroleum prices have risen primarily as a result of tensions between Iran and Western powers, coupled with increasing demand of major oil-consuming countries.

To help public transport cope with the unabated increase in prices, the Department of Energy (DOE) last week completed the “reloading” of the first set of beneficiaries of fuel assistance cards under the Pantawid Pasada Program.

The program, which started in May 2011, is an interim measure of the government to cushion the impact of high fuel prices, particularly on public utility jeepneys.

Jose Rene Almendras, DOE secretary, said that jeepneys with Pantawid Pasada cards claimed before December 31, 2011 and have been loaded with an initial amount of P1,050 within the same timeframe, can now enjoy the P1,200 reloaded in their cards.

The DOE said that it will follow the plate-number sequence in its reloading.

Since reloading has been done for 0, it will then be followed by 1 until 9.

“Announcements will be made each time the reloading of all cards with specified plate number is completed at the bank’s end to reduce or downright eliminate confusion in using the cards’ load,” Almendras said.
