New York’s wine industry is growing, but faces challenges

Jeffrey Blackwell
With much of New York’s economy in slow decline, the wine industry is providing a bright spot, especially in the Finger Lakes, the state’s largest wine-producing region.
The industry generates $3.75 billion in annual economic activity, including employment, tourism, new investment and sales revenues, according to the Canandaigua-based New York Wine & Grape Foundation.
And each year the number of wineries continues to grow, to a total of 307 statewide.
All told, it sounds like the industry’s salad days. But many are wondering if business could be better. With a surge of new wine drinkers, wine-producing states and regions worldwide, local wineries are looking for ways to compete for the palates and wallets of consumers even in their own backyard.
The prescription for growth seems not to be a single miracle pill, but a combination of cures that includes expanding outlets for wine sales, polishing the brand of New York wine for new markets and making sure customers can find their favorite bottle of New York red or white in local stores and restaurants.
These may seem like easy remedies. But as winery owners have found, it’s anything but easy to change state laws dating to Prohibition and to make a bigger splash in a market dominated by California, Europe and other regions around the world.
“You go into a restaurant in Rochester, there is a very good chance that just 30 miles away from the Finger Lakes you won’t find Finger Lakes wines,” said Dave Mansfield, owner of Three Brothers Wineries and Estates on Seneca Lake. “That really hurts our national brand when we can’t even get liquor stores and restaurants in our own area to carry our wines. How, then, can we expose it to the rest of the world?”
Western rivals
Numbers to illustrate a statistical picture of the U.S. industry do not always provide a clear snapshot because most wineries are small businesses that don’t publicly report revenues. But according to the U.S. Department of the Treasury, New York is growing and yet losing ground to other major wine-producing states. At one time New York was a solid second to California in production, number of wineries and acres of vines. But over the past decade the state’s position has slipped in some ways.
