According to Motoichi Yonei, executive director of the Association of Japanese Importers of Wines and Spirits, “2008 was severe for wine importers in Japan. From the beginning of the year, professionals have faced increased costs related to rising oil prices to unfavorable exchange rates. These additional costs have exceeded the efforts of professionals keep the prices down and, therefore, forced many professionals to increase the price of wine. ”
In this context, states the bureau of Burgundy wines, Burgundy has very resilient in the 2008/2009 with a decline of only 3% in volume and 5% in value.
“It is true that in Japan, wine is associated with gastronomy, culture, pleasure. Demand for education to wine and tasting grows from year to year and schools wines are increasingly successful, although the annual consumption of wine is still quite limited (2.5 liters / capita) and somewhat stagnant for three years.”
Burgundy still sells more white wines (55%, thanks to wines of Chablis that weigh more than a quarter of Burgundy wines exported), than reds. In terms of consumption, the Japanese wine market is however dominated by red wines (48% of wine consumed in Japan) against 43% for white wines and 8% for rosé wines.
