Massacre victim’s spouse can’t send kids to school

Thursday, June 23, 2011
“MY KIDS are unable to go to school because of my meager earnings.”
This was the formal testimony of the wife of one of 32 media workers murdered in the 2009 Maguindanao massacre allegedly perpetrated by the powerful Ampatuan political clan, including the family’s patriarch, Andal Ampatuan Sr.
Gloria Teodoro, spouse of Central Mindanao Inquirer reporter Andres Teodoro, testified before the sala of Quezon City Regional Trail Court (RTC) Branch 221 Judge Jocelyn Solis-Reyes on Wednesday.
Teodoro, a masseuse, is asking that her family be awarded P15 million in indemnity after her husband was killed along with his colleagues in Barangay Salman, Maguindanao province by gunmen allegedly upon the orders of the Ampatuans.
“Ni hindi ko po kayang mapag-aral ang aming mga anak dahil kakarampot lang po ang kita ko,” she said, adding her husband also has four children with his first wife.
Although she is asking for a large sum, “no amount of money could ever equal the life of her husband,” she said in Filipino during the resumption of the case’s civil hearings.
Her spouse’s death has resulted in damages estimated at P5 million for her family, but the monetary terms will never be enough to compensate for her losses.
“Even P10 million is not enough,” she told the court.
During her testimony, Teodoro also recounted that she spent P95,000 for the wake and burial of her husband.
Teodoro also said that she found it more painful to see her children losing interest in interacting with kids their age and going to school after their father was killed.
She added that what she and her children want now is to have a “peace of mind” by securing justice for Andres’ murder.
“We only have one prayer, justice so that we can have peace of mind and already move one,” Teodoro said in Filipino.
Earlier this month, Juliet Evardo, 50, mother of UNTV editor Jolito “Jojo” Evardo, another Maguindanao massacre victim, also asked for P15 million in damages during her testimony.
Complainant Cipriana Gatchalian, wife of massacre victim Santos Gatchalian Jr., sought a total of P16.1 million in damages from the respondents.
Noemi Parcon, husband of newspaper publisher Joel Parcon; Ramonita Salaysay, married to radio station manager Napoleon Salaysay; and Catherine Nunez, mother of UNTV reporter Victor Nunez; are seeking a total of P35 million in indemnity from the accused.
Salaysay and Nunez are seeking P15.1 million, while Parcon is asking for P20 million.
A total of 58 civilians were killed, with all but one of the victims’ bodies recovered.
