Masantol fishkill ‘man-made’
May 6, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Fourth district Board Member Nestor Tolentino said Wednesday that the tons of dead fish discovered along the Masantol portion of the Pampanga River over the weekend was not environment-related, but may have been a result of man-made indiscriminate fishing.
Tolentino, chairman of the Provincial Board committee on environment, has been tasked by Governor Lilia Pineda to immediately investigate the root cause of the fishkill.
After Wednesday’s coastal management meeting at the Capitol, Tolentino told Sun.Star that in his initial investigation, the tons of dead fish may have been dumped there by non-Kapampangan fishermen plying the waters of Masantol.
“According to residents and local fishermen there, who know better, it was not caused by water pollution. It’s not fish kill actually but caused by irresponsible fishermen who caught the fish and then when they came short and died and was already stinking before they hit the market, they just threw them there,” Tolentino said.
He added: “They were apparently killed by the ‘sudsud’ system of fishing. On our way to Barangay Puti, Nanay (Governor Pineda) pointed to those boats and said they were perfect for a river cruise because of their size. But we were told by Masantol locals that the boats were from Bulacan and Bataan and occasionally docked there. The tons of dead fish really were a result of irresponsible fishing.”
The board member revealed that the dumping of dead fish in the river was not the handiwork of local fishermen but unscrupulous fishermen coming from other areas. He added that the big boats were not boats used by Masantol fishermen.
“Besides, it is causing water and air pollution because of the foul smell the dead fish emanate,” he said.
Tolentino said that as soon as possible, he will conduct a committee hearing on the incident with concerned officials and agencies, as ordered by the governor.
