Le Clos Micot is a Premier Cru climat of the Pommard appellation in the Cote de Beaune. Wines made from grapes grown within the climat may claim the Pommard Premier Cru title and also cite the Le Clos Micot name on their labels.
Le Clos Micot is named after the nobleman, Comte Vivant Micaut, who built the Chateau de Pommard around vineyards formerly tended by Cistercian monks. Le Clos Micot is a walled vineyard site very close to the Chateau, and still within the original monastery grounds.
The Premier Cru vineyards of Pommard run in a narrow belt between the cooler, over-exposed sites on the 1300ft (400m) hilltops and the over-fertile flatter land below. Pommard’s Pinot Noir vines are at their best when grown in shallow, mineral-rich soil with good drainage; precisely the kind of terroir found on the mid-slope of the Cote d’Or escarpment.
There are variations in the soil make-up even within the Pommard Premier Cru vineyard sites, from the deeper, richer alluvial soils lower down on the slopes, through the classic Burgundian clay-limestone soils on the mid-slopes, to marl and brown soil in the higher sites. The more ‘masculine’ style of many Pommard wines is often attributed to the presence of iron in the local soils, and to the mineral-rich clays which are particularly prevalent here.
