Lantern fest aims ASEAN glitter

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO–The executive committee of the Giant Lantern Festival (GLF) 2013 is eyeing this year’s Ligligan Parul as an ASEAN event aimed at inviting foreign visitors from the Southeast Asian countries.

“We want the GLF to be an ‘ASEAN’ event,” GLF chairperson, Engr. Marni Castro, said in a statement.
The members of the ASEAN countries are East Timor, Cambodia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines and Brunei.
Castro furthered that the GLF 2013 is open to partnerships with travel agencies and airline companies in line with the preparation of the annual GLF which is scheduled on December 14.

For this year’s GLF celebration, the members of the 2013 Executive Committee were named by virtue of Executive Order No. 2013-021 released by Mayor Edwin D. Santiago last July 22.

Castro, as chairperson, and Laus Group of Companies Director, Ma. Theresa Laus, supporting him as vice chairperson, are active members of the Multi-Sectoral Governance Council and private sector partners of the city government.

The committee is composed of former festival chairpersons, city hall department heads, government agencies and private sector partners.
Sub-committees are set to convene weekly to plan and discuss matters on program flow, barangay accreditation, physical arrangement, promotions, awards, judges, sponsorship and traffic.

The GLF, locally known as “Ligligan Parul,” celebrates 105 years of lantern-making in San Fernando and promotes the Parul Sampernandu (local lantern) industry.

Last year’s GLF attracted an estimated 350,000 local and foreign tourists based on consolidated reports of tourism-related establishments and the City Tourism and Investment Promotion Office (CTIPO).
