Indigents benefit from cash-for-work program

BACOLOR — Some 200 indigents here were beneficiaries of the cash-for-work program of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the Municipal Government of Bacolor.
The beneficiaries received P2,480 for work they rendered for 10 days under the program.
DSWD Regional Director Adelina Apostol said the program aims to help indigents get cash in exchange for cleaning premises, rehabilitation of canals, road clean-ups and assistance in development works that are within their skill level.
Apostol added the cash-for-work project is a short-term intervention for farmers and indigents and their families who are distressed and in need of assistance.
Mayor Jose Maria Hizon lauded the program for giving indigents here a chance to earn money in a decent and beneficial manner.
He said the program is a great help in teaching indigents to earn money through hard work.
“We are very happy that the DSWD has given our people this opportunity. We hope that more projects like this will be implemented for the benefit of our constituents here,” Hizon said.
Meanwhile, Board Member Monina Laus, who represented Governor Lilia Pineda in the event, said the program is a good way of teaching the people to use their skills for community work.
She added the beneficiaries were also able to learn new work-related skills through the DSWD program.
The beneficiaries were identified through the DSWD’s National Household Targeting System for Poverty Reduction (NHTS-PR) survey, which also serves as basis for the Pantawid Pamilya and Social Pension programs.
The program aims to generate temporary employment and provide income augmentation to indigents, small-scale farmers and fisherfolk, as well as those affected by disasters and emergencies, and encourage community participation in implementing community-defined projects and prepare them for emergency, hunger mitigation and food security initiatives.
