Philippines Wine Shop Clark Wine Center is pleased to share with you articles, news and information about wine, wine events, wine tasting and other topics related to wine and the appreciation of wine.

Hospices de Beaune is a very exciting event that takes place in Beaune every third weekend of November. Initially created as a charity event to raise funds for the ill in 1450, the tradition continues to this day, with wealthy landowners donating vineyards to benefit the Hospices. Originally, the Hospices was a hospital in the Hotel Dieu, a structure that exists today in the center of town. Inside, one can see a recreation of what the hospital looked like, with curtained alcoves for patients stationed around the perimeter.

Roland Masse is in charge of handling the donated 58 ha of vineyards used to make the wine that would be sold at auction, and under his watch no herbicides or pesticides are used. Clive Coats MW wrote an interesting article about Hospices in the November 2010 issue of Decanter.

In addition to activities related to Hopsices de Beaune, I am going to meet with producers. On Wednesday I will visit Domaine de D’Arlot, where Oliver Leriche (pictured above)  is winemaker. It takes its name from the river that runs through the village of Premeaux-Prissey. It is a property owned by AXA Millesimes since 1987. and AXA has generously given capital to improve the vineyard and winery.

I will spend Thursday with Jeanne-Marie DuChamps, visiting many of her producers which include Domaine Langoureau, Domaine M. Bouzereau, Domaine Lafouge, and Domaine Rapet.
