HAU not paralyzed by strike

ANGELES CITY–An official of the Holy Angel University (HAU) on Friday stressed that the operations of the premiere school “are normal” despite the more than two weeks strike of 85 teachers.

Edna Marriza Santos, assistant to the president and negotiator of the school for the collective bargaining agreement (CBA), denied the allegations of the Holy Angel University Teachers and Employees Union (HAUTEU) that classes are affected by the strike which started last August 15. She added that they have a total of 676 teachers and the “85 striking ones were covered by the remaining and substitute teachers.”

“We respect the rights of the teachers to strike. But we must also be respected for ensuring that the operations be normal,” said Santos, who was interviewed at her office.

Santos said that “we must all remember that there is a third party and these are the students.”
“The students are the reason why we are here and must continue to operate,” said Santos. She disclosed that HAU has at least 18,800 students.

Santos said the HAU management is “also wishing for an amicable settlement with the HAUTEU.”
Santos denied the allegations of the HAUTEU that they had not been transparent in dealing with the union.

Veronica Pangilinan, HAUTEU spokesperson, earlier cited Republic Act 6728, the law requiring 70 percent of incremental proceeds (IP) from tuition fee increase (TFI) should go to: the improvement of salaries, wages and benefits of teaching and non-teaching personnel; 20 percent for physical improvement; and 10 percent for return of investment. She added that “they basically want the report on where the increases and money go and the report the HAU gave was not supported by documents”

Santos said “we have been transparent and we have been giving the same report over the more than 10 years of dealing with the CBA.” She added that the report they gave last year was “the only one questioned.”

Santos cited the agreement between them and the union under a provision stipulated under the CBA. It said “the University shall furnish the Union a copy of the latest audited financial statements, including corresponding notes five (5) working days prior to the consultation on tuition fee/salary increases, within the last sixty (60) days of the life of the CBA and during the collective bargaining agreement.
