Guv wants reports on water problem

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Governor Lilia Pineda directed Tuesday the concerned local government executives and officials of municipal and rural health units to submit to Capitol immediately and on a regular basis “black and white” documentation of the status of drinking water there.
The Philippine Medical Association, in a mission to Masantol, found drinking water in coastal barangays unsafe after several tests.
About 20 children have been affected with diarrhea because of the water drawn from wells.
Pineda said she reminded sanitary engineers of the case that “they are the ones in the frontline and we at Capitol would provide the necessary interventions and support. But without black and white reports, how will we know? Malala na ang problema pagdating sa amin.”
“They want us to buy the testing equipment worth P5 million. But I said that all testing will now be done by Maynilad experts. That amount would rather go for other needs of victims. There are about 30,000 families in fourth district coastal barangays that would be affected by this but Capitol is ready so long as local officials report to us regularly status on drinking water,” said the governor.
She said they will also seek the help of the National Government through the Department of Health on this case.
General Services Office head Royce Pring ordered for the immediate refilling of available containers, where water is filtered and purified via the mobile plant accorded by the provincial administration of Ilocos Sur Governor Chavit Singson.
“We have been sending the affected residents 240 boxes of potable mineral water daily. In each shipment too, we dispatch about 200 containers of more than five gallons of purified water for each container. In support to the governor, we are working round the clock to provide affected residents with potable water to avert any crisis,” Pring told Sun.Star Pampanga.
