Guv vows more services in Misamis Oriental

July 12, 2011
MISAMIS Oriental Governor Oscar Moreno has assured the people of the province that he would continue to bring the government closer to them through the various projects that his administration will implement.
Moreno said that in his third and last term as governor of Misamis Oriental, he is now on the verge of attaining his eight-point agenda similar to the millennium goals of President Benigno Aquino III.
“We have focused to do our share in the country’s commitment of achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) on eight areas — reducing poverty and hunger, educating all children, empowering women, saving children, caring for mothers, combating diseases, using resources wisely and working together,” he said during his State of the Province Address (Sopa) delivered Monday at the Provincial Capitol Grounds.
He said to attain these, they have to continue with their revenue generation measures by strengthening their capacity to earn from local sources and invest in infrastructure by maintaining and rehabilitating the many access routes within the province.
Moreno claimed that this opened links to hinterlands areas in the province and to other parts of the region, and upgraded other social infrastructure such as the Laguindingan international airport.
In terms of health care system, Moreno said they already increased their efforts in improving the health and hospital systems through the assistance of various government and private agencies.
He also cited the importance of bringing the government to the people by addressing the need to respond positively to changes in the environment by building peace in former insurgency hotspots, programs for poverty alleviation, including reaching out to the indigenous communities.
“We have been building peace with peace so we brought our programs on poverty alleviation in former insurgency hotspots, including reaching out to the indigenous communities,” he said.
In terms of education, Moreno also shared his achievement through building different classrooms and helps establish national high schools with pure commitment, saying the children are the future leaders of Misamis Oriental.
Moreno said the collective efforts of bringing development programs across the province resulted in better scores on eradicating extreme poverty and hunger while the country on an aggregate level is progressing slowly in the said areas.
Based on statistics, Misamis Oriental has about 30.3 percent of its population in 2009 with income less than US$1 a day, while Northern Mindanao’s average was at 39.6 percent.
The province also has the least poverty incidence in Northern Mindanao.
Moreno also discussed the Provincial Government’s support to the cooperatives and farmers by giving them opportunities related to agricultural productivity.
“We supported our cooperatives and farmers by ushering them to the opportunities of agricultural productivity as we support the initiatives of the national government with our ‘teamwork’ or ‘bayanihan’ spirit and pride in collective achievement in the delivery of services,” he said.
Moreno said that before his term ends as governor, he will continue to strive harder in providing better services to the province, endorsing Vice Governor Norris Babiera to continue what he has started for Misamis Oriental.
Since he was elected as governor, Moreno has been giving his Sopa similar to the State of the Nation Address (Sona) of President Aquino.
