Guv: ‘No short cuts to floods prevention’

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Pampanga Governor Lilia Pineda ordered the local government unit heads to facilitate the immediate preparations with the onset of the rainy season to prevent flooding in the province.
“Solutions must be long term. Walang short cut sa flooding problems natin at hindi puwede iyung repairs lang,” she said after visiting and distributing relief goods to distressed Kapampangans in barangays San Esteban, Consuelo and Dalayap in Macabebe and Masantol towns on Tuesday.
Pineda stressed the need for desilting of waterways and rivers.
“What we really need is desilting. We need to desilt vital waterways and rivers kasi kahit pagawa ko nang pagawa iyan ay wala rin. What is important here is the long-term solution to our flooding problems. Hindi na puwede iyung repair-repair lang,” she said in an exclusive interview Wednesday morning.
Pineda said she had instructed Capitol engineers to study the root cause of the flooding in many barangays and towns, as the Provincial Government is poised to procure heavy equipment to address the concerns of local government units.
The lady governor has vowed to tap into some P70-million in calamity funds — in light of the Department of Public Works and Highways regional office’s lack of a budget — to solve the problem on a long-term basis.
“Hindi na talaga puwede iyung repairs lang o upgrading. What we need here is something permanent and long term. Hindi pwede na ganito na lang ng ganito. Capitol will act on it fast,” said Pineda.
The governor has also instructed officials, like Provincial Administrator Andres Pangilinan Jr., to effect the release of plastic chairs and desks to schools affected by the flooding.
The governor also ordered officials concerned to check on medical supplies stockpiling, as well as the provision of ambulances for hospitals in the fourth district and other provincial-run medical centers.
