Group: US support to Philippines not new

THERE is nothing new in the pledge of the United States (US) government to help modernize the Philippine military in the wake of a dispute over the Spratlys Island, progressive group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan said Saturday.

“Historical facts will show that that the US government has given pretty much the same assurances during the Cold War when it sought to justify the presence of the US military bases in the Philippines. The same promise was also made when the US sought to justify the VFA (Visiting Forces Agreement and the stationing of US troops in Mindanao,” said Bayan secretary general Renato Reyes, Jr. stressing that the pledge of support from the US is not without strings attached.

This was in reaction to the statement of support from US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in a meeting with the Department of Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario at the US State Department last June 23.

“The US is determined and committed to supporting the defense of the Philippines, and that means trying to find ways of providing affordable material and equipment that will assist the Philippine military to take the steps necessary to defend itself,” Clinton said in a statement cited by the Philippine embassy.
Reyes believes Clinton is only telling Malacanang what it wants to hear, in exchange for more concessions for US forces in the Philippines.

“This has been the story of our relations with the US. They make promises in exchange for concessions but we end up no better than when we started,” he remarked.

The Palace, for its part, said that Secretary Del Rosario’s meeting with Clinton was just a renewal of commitment between two allies where they reiterated the Philippine government’s call for a multi-lateral approach to resolve the dispute.

Bayan warned that the intervention of the US in the Spratlys dispute over the West Philippine Sea would only worsen the escalating tension between Philippines and China.

The group also said that the planned joint naval exercises by the US and Philippines on June 28 near the disputed area may be seen as a provocative act by the Chinese government.
