Farmers ready to takeover Luisita

TARLAC — Hacienda Luisita-based farmers, who are representing the original 6,296 farm-worker beneficiaries, announced on Wednesday their readiness to take over the sprawling 6,453-hectare sugar estate.
This was gleaned in a statement read by Unyon ng mga Manggagawa sa Agrikultura (UMA) secretary general, Rodel Mesa, at a rally in Mendiola bridge on Wednesday, coinciding with the birth anniversary of Philippine hero Andres Bonifacio.
Leaders and members of UMA, the mother federation of Alyansa ng mga Manggagawang Bukid sa Asyenda Luisita (Ambala) and United Luisita Workers Union (Ulwu) officially announced the “takeover” of Hacienda Luisita.
They ordered President Benigno Aquino III and his family to vacate the sugar estate in Tarlac City.
The “real owners” of Luisita also told the military inside the sugar estate to leave the 4,916 Luisita, now that it is officially belongs to 6,296 farmer beneficiaries.
Mesa said the distribution of Hacienda Luisita to farm worker beneficiaries should be under the mode of free land distribution; and no just compensation should be given to family of Aquino to complete the delivery of long-deserved social justice to sugar workers inside the hacienda.
He also called on Aquino and the Cojuangco-Aquino family to immediately pay farm workers P1.33 billion from previous sales of the 200 hectares of land in 1996, the Luisita Industrial Park and the controversial sale of 80-hectare lot for Subic Clark Tarlac Expressway project.

Mesa added that the P1.33 billion shares from proceeds of sold land, which the court said should be given to 6,296 farm workers, will be used as productive capital and to procure farm equipment and other support infrastructures so the farm workers can improve agricultural production inside Luisita.
“Definitely no compensation for the Cojuangco-Aquinos. There is no such thing as just compensation for a long-running crime of social injustice, feudal exploitation, land reform denials and massacre of peasant lives,” Mesa said.
“Remember what happened on November 16, 2004 — the day of infamous Hacienda Luisita massacre. His family had gained monstrous benefits from their illegal and immoral acquisition of Hacienda Luisita since 1957 and asking for just compensation is the most ridiculous thing on earth,” Mesa said.
UMA said, “In fact, it is the HLI (Hacienda Luisita Inc.) and the Cojuangco-Aquino clan who should pay farm workers. For more than half-a-century era of grand slam slavery and exploitation, the Luisita folks even deserve all your family has right now.”

A source close to the Cojuangco’s revealed that the P2-billion obligation to San Miguel Corporation (SMC) should be paid either by the National Government who will take over the land or by farm worker beneficiaries.
UMA, however, insisted that the P2-billion debt obligation of HLI to SMC is a family affair transaction and that the farm workers have nothing to do with it.
“Mathematically speaking, the 67 percent controlling interest of the family of President Aquino in HLI gained P 2.7 from the sales of 200 hectares of land in 1995, the sale of Luisita Industrial Park and from the sale of 80 hectare for the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway road network while granting the shares of P1.3 billion awarded to farm worker beneficiaries constitutes 33 percent,” the UMA said.
“The entire proceeds from the sale could reach as P4.03 billion, with P2.67 billion going to the pockets of the Cojuangcos. And now Aquino wants farm workers to pay Danding and get another P5 billion from so-called just compensation. Where is justice here?” the group stated.
UMA asserted the HLI management and the family of Aquino is now using the P2-billion debt to SMC as a convenient excuse to pave way for Danding and SMC’s takeover of Hacienda Luisita.
