‘Falcon’ may turn to typhoon Saturday
Friday, June 24, 2011
MANILA (Updated 9:20 a.m.) — A Science and Technology official said Tropical Storm Falcon might develop into typhoon Saturday morning after it slightly intensified Friday.
Department of Science and Technology Undersecretary Graciano Yumul said Friday Falcon might intensify Friday afternoon after it merged with the new low pressure area spotted near Catanduanes province.
A typhoon carries winds of at least 115 kilometers per hour near the center as weather agencies in China, Korea, United States, and Taiwan earlier expected Falcon to join this category on Friday.
Yumul, however, said Falcon will exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Saturday evening while leaving the whole country cloudy skies and scattered rain showers until June 29.
Acting weather division chief Robert Sawi also told Sun.Star, “The storm will soon be categorized as typhoon as it prepares to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Saturday.”
As of 4 a.m. Friday, Falcon (international codename: Meari) was spotted at 370 kilometers east northeast of Tuguegarao City with a maximum sustained winds of 85 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of 100 kph. Falcon is moving north northwest at 19 kph.
Public storm signal number 1 is still up in Calayan, Batanes Group of Islands and the Babuyan Group of Islands while central and northern Luzon are expected to experience heavy rainfall Saturday morning.
The Department of Education (DepEd)-National Capital Region (NCR) has suspended classes on Friday in pre-school, elementary, and high school of public and private schools.
DepEd-NCR director Elena Ruiz said the announcement came after consulting the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services (Pagasa), which said water volume is expected to increase in the next five hours on Friday, prompting overflow of some rivers in the region.
Classes at all levels in public and private schools in Dasmariñas, Rosario, Bacoor, Cavite City, Angono, Cainta were also suspended.
DepEd also announced suspension of classes on Friday at all levels in public and private schools in Angono, Cainta, Sta. Cruz, Laguna, Calamba City, Bulacan, Antipolo City, Malolos City, Subic, Zambales, Bataan, and Pangasinan.
Colleges and universities in some parts of Metro Manila also suspended classes on Friday upon the announcement of Commission on Higher Education.
Meanwhile, budget carriers Cebu Pacific and Sea Air continue to experience flight cancellations due to bad weather brought by intensifying Falcon.
In a report by the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), six flights were called off as of 7 a.m. Friday.
These include four flights of Cebu Pacific from Manila to Naga and vice versa, and Sea Air’s roundtrip journey to Batanes, bringing the total of cancelled trips to 53 since Thursday, the MIAA noted.
The Pagasa, in its 5 a.m. bulletin, said Falcon is expected at 330 km northeast of Basco, Batanes by Saturday morning and at 690 km north northeast of Basco, Batanes or at 270 km west northwest of Okinawa, Japan by Sunday morning.
The weather bureau said Falcon is expected to enhance the southwest monsoon and would bring rains over central and southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
Residents in low-lying and mountainous area are advised to watch out for flashfloods and landslides, while the public and the disaster coordinating councils concerned are advised to take appropriate actions and watch for hourly updates from Pagasa. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
