” Exporting wine is easier said than done when you have to sell a bottle for ten times its domestic price” (Feb 26, 2010)

Clark Wine Center is pleased to relay interesting news and articles about wine to you on this web site.  We hope that this will enhance your wine shopping experience when you visit this wine shop in Pampanga Clark Freeport Zone.

“Export wine is easy to say!”, so exclaim the Italians on winenews.it, while demonstrating that the different fees and margins of intermediaries during the wine export process leads commonly to multiply the price of bottled wine ex-cellar by ten to obtain its price on wine export markets.

The phenomenon affects not only emerging markets but also traditional wine markets, especially those as complex as the U.S. market. “The real risk is that foreign consumers do not perceive the true value of our wines”, summed up the magazine. Paying the price of a local high-end to buy a middle-range foreign wine can indeed distort perceptions and lead, de facto, to economic protectionism favoring local productions … When they exist.

Winenews.it gives some examples: in Brazil, a bottle of his wine cellar 8 Italian € costs 45 euros at the cellar of Rio de Janeiro, because of rising costs of transportation and an ad valorem tax of 27% still wines, an import tax and excise duties levied by the destination zones. China is also a booming market, but the bottle of wine that leaves Rome costing 5 euro arrives in Beijing at 25-30 euros, because of transportation costs and an import tax ranging from 40 to 60% . India is no exception, with rates of taxation varying from one state to another, but where it still takes 50% duty, 200% excise tax, 9% for unloading and customs clearance, a filing fee of 29%, 12.5% for the importer, 12% for the wholesaler, 15% and more for the retailer : the bottle leaving Rome at 5 € ends up on the Indian shelves at 55 euros or so.

Winenews.it also reveals that a wine destined to the American market sees his ex-cellar price multiplied by 2 to 3, at the very best, in entering the U.S. market. That is a minimum, observed whenever the chain between Italy and America consists of only two players: the producer and its distributor / cellar (where the distributor has an importation licence). If a third (namely, an importer) has to interfere, it will take at least 3 to 4 times the ex-cellar price to get the final price.
