Embassy: Expired chocolates not from New Zealand

MABALACAT — The New Zealand Embassy denied reports that the expired chocolate, which caused food poisoning to some 19 students here, were imported from their country.
An official from the Embassy called Sun.Star Pampanga Friday and complained that the reputation of their country was affected because of the report.
Hernando Banal of the New Zealand Embassy said they will conduct an investigation to identify individuals and traders who imported the chocolate bars.
The students, who are enrolled at the Camachiles National High School here, were hospitalized after eating the expired chocolate candies they bought from an ambulant vendor outside their school.
The students were admitted last Tuesday at the Mabalacat District Hospital after they suffered from vomiting, abdominal pain, nausea, and other symptoms.
All of the students were already discharged from the hospital and are now safe.
Superintendent Rodney Raymond Louie J. Baloyo IV, town police chief, said the students ate expired chocolate bars, with markings Delfi Natural Nut Xtreme Bars, Apricot, which were made in New Zealand.
Baloyo welcomed the investigation, which will be conducted by the New Zealand Embassy. “Maganda ‘yun, dapat talaga mgapadala sila ng representative dito para makita nila,” he said.
He said they are set to file charges against the ambulant vendor identified as Fredmie De Leon, 24, who sold the chocolate bars to the students.
Camachiles chairman Jessie Duran reported the incident to the Dau police station.
Baloyo said they confiscated several packs of chocolate candies from the vendor.
The candies were turned over to the Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAR) for examination.
When interrogated, De Leon said that a certain Maribel Simbulan from Quebiawan, City of San Fernando, supplied the candies. (Reynaldo G. Navales)
