DOST fair whets Central, South Luzon youth interest in Science

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO—Science and Technology Secretary Mario Montejo on Thursday underscored that the conduct of a cluster-wide fair seeks to awaken the interest of the youth in Central Luzon, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, Bicol and Metro Manila in Science.
In his speech that was read by Undersecretary Carol Yorobe during the opening of the 2012 Southern Luzon Cluster Science and Technology Fair in Pampanga, Montejo said, “the occasion is being celebrated to showcase and demonstrate the contribution of science and technology in the Philippines which would hopefully lead to students being inspired to come up with their own researches and inventions.
To propagate such cause, Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is sponsoring scholarships both in the secondary—through the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) and college via partner premiere educational institutions that would harness their knowledge and skills.
Montejo bared that “PSHS opened a campus inside Clark Freeport to attract more gifted youngsters from Central Luzon while a total of 58 Kapampangans currently benefit from our tertiary scholarships.”
Aside from awakening youth interest, Montejo stressed that DOST is also helping micro, small, and medium entrepreneurs improve their craft in order to expand market, boost sales, and generate employment.
“In Pampanga, we have helped various businesses including Mallari’s Nursery Furniture, Ellen’s House of Frames and Crafts wherein their glasses ‘ay nakakasilaw sa ganda’ (dazzling in beauty), Philiana Design which produces world class furnitures, Aiza’s sweets that ‘makes delicious pastries and delicacies,” he said.
Guided by the theme “Science, Technology and Innovation: Working Together for Growth and Development”, the November 22-24 affair showcases the recent scientific breakthroughs and advanced technologies developed by government and private research institutions from Regions 3,4A, 4B, 5, and NCR.
People from all walks of life will be able to see the latest products and services on information and communication technology, electronics, and renewable energy among others.
Apart from exhibits, an academic contest, research colloquium, and seminar on Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazards otherwise known as Project NOAH will also be featured.
Project NOAH is a responsive program for disaster prevention and mitigation, specifically for the Philippines’ warning agencies, that is primarily intended to reduce casualties and property loss from extreme hazard events.
Its mission is to undertake disaster science research and development, advance the use of cutting edge technologies, and recommend innovative information services in government’s disaster prevention and mitigation efforts wherein its immediate task is to integrate current disaster science research and development projects and initiate new efforts within the DOST.
Project NOAH presently has eight components namely: Hydrometeorological Devices in hard-hit areas of the Philippines (Hydromet), Disaster Risk Exposure Assessment for Mitigation – Light Detection and Ranging (DREAM-LIDAR), Enhancing Geohazards Mapping through LIDAR, Coastal Hazards and Storm Surge Assessment and Mitigation (CHASSAM), Flood Information Network (FloodNET), Local Development of Doppler Radar Systems (LaDDeRS), Landslide Sensors Development, and Weather Hazard Information Project (WHIP). ● (PIA 3)
