Don’t turn this into ‘airport drama number 2’, Palace tells Arroyo camp

MANILA – Malacanang on Friday asked the camp of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to calm down and try not to make the transfer of the lawmaker to the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC) into an “airport drama part two”.
Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said there is no delay in the transfer of Mrs. Arroyo and the Philippine National Police has the entire Friday to implement the order of the Pasay Regional Trial Court to bring Arroyo to the VMMC.
“Let us all calm down…Let’s not make this into another airport drama part two. The order of the court was given to the PNP and it was not mentioned there when the order should be implemented. The PNP has full discretion about this transfer,” she said.
Valte referred to the tension and chaos that took place at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport last month when Arroyo attempted to leave the country to seek medical treatment abroad.
The Palace official said Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo told them that the camp of Arroyo was not given a specific time for the transfer so that she could rest inside her suite at St. Luke’s Medical Center while waiting.
“Hindi naman po sila nauulanan, hindi po sila naaarawan. The former President is very comfortable in her suite, konting hintay lang po,” she noted.
Arroyo’s spokesperson Elena Bautista-Horn in a television interview said Arroyo was already prepared to leave Taguig City as early as 6 a.m. Friday.
However, her transfer could not be carried out due to the bad weather.
Robredo offered for her to be airlifted to VMMC but Arroyo refused due to two incidents of helicopter crashes in the past.
Valte denied that the government has no contingency plans for the transfer but said that she could not divulge it because of security reasons.
She also turned down the suggestion of Arroyo’s camp to ride a taxi to VMMC just to follow the order of the court.
“These are not the actuations of somebody who seriously believes that there are threats against the life of her former boss. We are doing the best that the PNP can to secure the former President,” said Valte.
Asked if the camp of Arroyo was just “overreacting”, she answered, “Hindi po sila inaapi, hindi nga ho sila nauulanan, very comfortable po ang dating Pangulong Arroyo doon sa kanilang paghihintay. Konting hinahon lang po ang aming hinihingi para mai-effect po ng maayos ‘yung transfer.”
Valte assured that the transfer of the former President will be done as the weather gets better anytime today.
“The PNP will choose the most secure mode of transfer…We don’t want any allegations of lax of security,” she stressed. (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
