DepEd urged: Teach basic health issues to students

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – Dr. Marcelo Jaochico, Provincial Health Officer (PHO), appealed to the Department of Education (DepEd) in Pampanga to teach basic health issues and problems to their students.

Jaochico disclosed that the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, together with their office, is preparing the provincial health code and one of the provisions is the basic education on primary diseases affecting children especially during rainy season.

He said DepEd should also include in the curriculum of elementary schools the basics about dengue, tuberculosis, leptospirosis and rabies and how to prevent the spread of these diseases.

“It will be a short lecture that will be infused in their science subject. It will not affect the regular lesson because it will only take 5 to 10 minutes daily to discuss the subject matter,” Jaochico stated.

The doctor said as early as 6 years old, the students should be well-informed about the nature of a disease like dengue, its effect and how to prevent its spread.

“Children are much easy to teach. You just have to create awareness about the dreadful effect of the disease. This will make them conscious on the preventive measures they have to take,” said Jaochico.

He added that, under the health code, science teachers will undergo seminars and training about the said diseases so they can effectively inform the students and interested parents.

Renato Yabut, president of the public school supervisors of Pampanga, is enthusiastic about the idea. He said it has been customary for teachers to remind the students about health awareness and it will be better if it will be backed-up in the health code of the province.
