DENR sues Bataan officials

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — To prove their vigilance against illegal logging, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Central Luzon has filed an administrative case against local officials in Bataan province.
Ricardo Calderon, chief of the DENR in Central Luzon, filed the administrative case against Bagac Police Chief George Santiago for the unauthorized disposal of 1,900 board feet of confiscated lumber under his custody early this year.
n a phone interview, Calderon said the case is still pending at the prosecutor’s office and there are no preliminary investigations set yet.

Forest Resources Conservation Division Chief Fred Sadueste said that he led the DENR five-man team that conducted the ocular inspection at the depository area in Bagac and found out that the pieces of lumber are missing.
Santiago was suspended for 10 days with forfeiture of pay and allowances.
He donated the logs to the Bagac Tourism Office and Bagumbayan barangay council.
Illegal logging charges against Bagac Mayor Rommel del Rosario were also filed at the Prosecutors Office in Balanga after some 1000 board feet of confiscated timbers loaded on a government vehicle were found in his private residence.
Del Rosario has been under surveillance by DENR men for the past six months.
Sadueste added that the DENR is awaiting the promulgation of the Prosecutors Office.
In the last four years, the DENR in Central Luzon has confiscated a total of 870,000 board feet of contraband forest products worth P29 million and filed over 150 illegal logging cases in local courts in the last four years.
