‘Dead’ gambling syndicate leader is supposedly alive in Manila

MANILA–The alleged leader of a gambling syndicate, which has been reported to have died while in Macau or China last month, is supposedly alive and has been staying in the Philippines, a lawmaker said Thursday.
Loo Choon Beng, who goes by the alias Ben Lui, has been charged in the Parañaque City Prosecutor’s Office with syndicated estafa after pocketing some P160 million from the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor) last May. Lui’s group was caught on camera cheating at card games at the Airport Casino Filipino branch in Parañaque City.
The alleged cheaters have been a subject of a joint probe conducted by the House Committees on Justice, and Games and Amusements.
The Games and Amusements Committee chairman, Manila Representative Amado Bagatsing, said he has already instructed the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to verify reports that Lui has been spotted in the area of the Cagayan Export Processing Zone Authority and at a Carmona, Cavite racetrack.
“Although were not yet sure of the reports, I have asked the NBI to check through Interpol and also three others including the cutter of the cards,” Bagatsing said in a text message.
The lawmaker has also received information that Lui is reportedly holding several passports.
“Singaporean passport lang niya ang namatay. Marami pala siyang passport. Meron din siyang Malaysian passport at nasa Pilipinas na naman daw. Baka nagpalit lang ng pangalan,” Bagatsing added.
In a hearing last month, Zambales Representative Mitos Magsaysay said that Lui’s girlfriend, Maria Zerra Hao, and right-hand man, Redin Capilan, helped the syndicate leader moved around the country. Both of them escaped with Lui to Macau when Pagcor busted their operation. (Kathrina Alvarez/Sunnex)
