Crime rate in Pampanga 3rd district ‘alarming’

HE Provincial Board committee on peace and order led by third district Board Member Rolly Macalino expressed alarm over the high crime rate in his district, particularly in the City of San Fernando.
Macalino and first district Board Member Crisostomo Garbo’s reactions came after Deputy Provincial Director for Operations of the Pampanga Provincial Police Office Superintendent Elbert Pagente reported that from January to April of this year, some 132 high-profile crimes (murder, rape, theft, robbery and encounters with riders in tandem) were recorded by police.
Of the 132 crimes in the third district, 116 were committed in San Fernando.

Pagente said crimes in the city and the whole district seem to occur at a rate of at least one crime per two hours.
“A lot of these are not even reported to police,” he said, citing 22 murder cases and eight car napping incidents as examples.
“If that is the case, then this is indeed alarming,” said Macalino, who discussed with third district chiefs of police and peace and order council members from the City of San Fernando, Mexico, Sta. Ana, Arayat and Bacolor, their immediate needs and suggestions regarding the upsurge of crime in the towns.
The meeting was an offshoot of an earlier peace and order dialogue summoned by Archbishop Paciano Aniceto a week ago.
Most of the problems noted by the police chiefs are the shortage of personnel, lack of funding and logistical support.
Garbo noted, however, that Governor Lilia Pineda has been all-out in supporting the police in its anti-crime drives.
“The governor has been fully supporting your efforts with sufficient funding from her intelligence funds. But rest assured we will inform her of your concerns,” he said.
Macalino added, “Si governor kasi ang nasisisi. Parang wala daw siyang ginagawa when in fact, peace and order is a top priority of her administration. Based on the crime rate you presented, Apu Ceto indeed has a basis to be alarmed.”
Police and local peace and order council chairmen agreed to beef up measures versus tandem riders, conduct crime mapping and strategic deployment and submit weekly reports to the committee for strategy formulation to address the high rate of crime in the towns. (Jovi T. De Leon)
