Corona urged anew to disclose all bank accounts

THE House prosecution panel urged anew impeached Chief Justice Renato Corona to disclose all of his assets to the public.

A recent survey results indicated that six in 10 Filipinos believe he has hidden wealth based on the undeclared money and assets in his statement of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN).
The Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey conducted from March 10 to 13 also showed that 12 percent of the 1,200 respondents disagreed to the claim of the prosecutors that the chief magistrate has hidden wealth, while 24 percent remained undecided.

“If Mr. Corona has in him a modicum of honor and self-respect, it would be best for him to bare himself to the public, opening up all his accounts – local and foreign currency, disclose all of his real assets – and then take the witness stand,” said House Deputy Speaker Lorenzo “Erin” Tanada, one of the spokespersons for the prosecution team.

“That is the ultimate test as to whether or not the impeachment process in the Senate will be acceptable to the people,” he added.

The 188 members of the House of Representatives who signed the impeachment complaint against Corona accused him of betrayal of public and trust and culpable violation of the Constitution for his failure to truthfully disclose his assets in his SALN since he became a member of the Supreme Court.

Deputy Majority Leader Romero Frederico Quimbo, also a spokesperson for the prosecution, doubted the ability of Corona’s lawyers to explain the inconsistencies in their client’s SALNs and assets as testified by their witnesses.

“What they will not be able to explain is how can you treat his failure to declare for several years all his condominiums as harmless? How can they explain the more than P31 million worth of bank accounts that he did not declare?” Quimbo pointed out in a text message.

Besides the peso bank accounts, prosecutors also tried to peek at the chief magistrate’s dollar accounts. A temporary restraining order (TRO) issued by the SC, however, prevented the impeachment tribunal from opening the said accounts.

“No expert can explain why he chose to hide behind a TRO to prevent his dollar assets from being examined,” Quimbo said.

Prosecutors earlier told the impeachment court that they have received information of a dollar account owned by Corona which had an initial deposit of $700,000.
