Cop scares kids out of videoke bar

A POLICE officer was arrested last Sunday night for allegedly threatening five minors inside a videoke joint on A. Soriano St. in the North Reclamation Area, Cebu City.
Mabolo Police Station Chief Sara Jean Recla said SPO1 Adonis Burgos, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, cocked his firearm and scared the children because they annoyed him.
Sun.Star Cebu is withholding the names of the minors, ages 11 to 13.
Burgos was released before noon yesterday after the victims’ parents, mostly fruit vendors, accepted the police officer’s apology and decided not to file charges against him.
Burgos tested positive in a liquor test and was detained. His 9mm pistol was confiscated.
Although Burgos was spared of criminal charges, he will still have to face an administrative investigation.
Burgos was immediately relieved, on the orders of Cebu City Police Office Director Melvin Ramon Buenafe, and will be temporarily assigned to the city police headquarters.
“We will never tolerate this kind of behavior,” Buenafe told reporters.
In TV 5’s Aksyon Bisaya report, operatives of the Special Weapons and Tactics (Swat) had to assist in forcing Burgos into his detention cell. When sought for comment, he denied threatening the minors.
‘Traumatized’
Jeanette Montillano, one of the parents, said her kids were traumatized by the incident.
“Dili na sila ganahan makakita niya. Kuyawan sila pusilon o patyon (They don’t want to see him. They’re afraid he might shoot or kill them),” she said.
Burgos was drinking with two civilians inside the establishment past 8 p.m. when he got annoyed when one of Montillano’s children, a second-year high school student, started singing.
Burgos told the boy, after singing his song, to go out.
When it was Montillano’s other child who started singing on the videoke machine, Burgos allegedly cocked his firearm under the table.
Out of fear, they ran away and went to the Mabolo Police Station to ask for help.
A complaint of grave threat in relation to Republic Act 7610, or the Special Protection of Children against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act, was set to be filed against Burgos, but the minors’ parents backed out.
“Hasul na siya. Pobre pa mi. Mas maayo among kwarta ipalit nalang namo og pagkaon (It’s a lot of hassle. And we’re poor. It would be better if we just used our money to buy food,” Montillano said.
