Communist rebels to pay tribute to Ka Roger Rosal
Sunday, October 9, 2011
MANILA (Updated) — All units of the New People’s Army (NPA) will pay a tribute with gun salutes on October 15 to Communist Party of the Philippines (CCP) spokesman Gregorio “Ka Roger” Rosal.
Rosal, who gave a voice and face to one of Asia’s longest-running Marxist insurgencies, had been rumored dead or suffering from an illness for some time, but his death was only confirmed on Sunday.
The Mao cap-wearing guerilla leader has died of a heart attack on June 22. He was 64.
CCP bureau liaison Marco Valbuena said the public announcement of Rosal’s death was delayed until his daughters and relatives were notified.
“The entire membership of the CPP, Red fighters of the NPA, revolutionary forces and the Filipino masses mourn Ka Roger’s death,” Valbuena’s statement read.
Senator Francis Pangilinan, who met with the National Democratic Front (NDF) leadership in Utrecht, Netherlands, earlier this year, said the matter was not discussed at the meeting.
“The information we had gathered was that prior to his death, he had a lingering illness which explains why he had become scarce for some time now,” Pangilinan, a former student activist, told Sun.Star in a text message.
“I don’t think it will directly impact on the ongoing talks,” he added.
Senator Gregorio Honasan II, a former military officer, said he had never met Rosal but he called him “an icon of the Leftist movement.”
He said the peace process must go on despite Rosal’s death, adding that pursuing peace between the government and the CPP-NPA-NDF must go beyond personalities.
Sun.Star tried to reach Presidential peace adviser Teresita Quintos-Deles and her staff for comment. She has yet to respond as of posting time.
The communist party and its armed wing, the New People’s Army, mourned Rosal’s death in a statement, saying, “His life of service to the revolution will serve as an inspiration to the people to carry forward their revolutionary struggles.”
“He was the effective voice of the revolution,” Netherlands-based rebel leader Luis Jalandoni said.
“He was so loved by the masses and members of the media. He was always easy to reach for interviews,” Jalandoni added.
While it hunted Rosal for years, the 120,000-strong military offered its condolences to Rosal’s family Sunday, saying it once offered medical help when news of his failing health spread. Rosal turned down the offer.
A son of impoverished sugar plantation workers, Rosal became a trade union organizer and student activist before deciding to go underground in the mountainous Quezon region southeast of the capital, Manila, in the 1970s to join the fight for a Marxist state.
He was captured a year after dictator Ferdinand Marcos imposed martial rule in the Philippines in 1972, but escaped a few months later.
Rosal served as rebel spokesman from the 1980s to the 1990s, using laptop computers, two-way radios and cell phones to bring guerrilla statements to households through radio and TV interviews.
He debated passionately with military spokesmen over the radio and often arranged visits for journalists to rebel encampments, regaling them by playing his harmonica and shaking their hands.
He nearly died of typhoid fever in 1995 then suffered a series of strokes in succeeding years, gradually removing him from the limelight. (Jonathan de Santos/AP/Sunnex)
