Comelec registrants decry ‘bayad pila’

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Some registrants for the upcoming barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan polls here Monday decried the “bayad pila” or the alleged fixers asking fees from those waiting in line so they would get “reservations” or be prioritized in the list of the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

Hundreds remain waiting in long lines, braving the heat of the sun and heavy downpours. Mostly, registration for the October polls continue past office hours.

“Ang tagal-tagal naming naghihintay sa mahabang pilang ito, tapos bigla na lang pong may isisingit sa unahan. May reservation daw po. Ganoon ba talaga ngayon? By reservation po ba?” asked students from Barangay Pandaras, who told Sun.Star Pampanga they had to rent a vehicle just to be early at the line.

Another group from Barangay Telebastagan told Sun.Star Pampanga that two men in civilian clothes approached them and asked if they wanted to “jump ahead” of the line and have themselves registered before others in cue.

“Kaso lang po naniningil sila ng P50 hanggang P100, depende sa layo po sa registration window. Ipipila daw po kami para mabilis. Obvious na obvious na mga fixer,” they said.

Officials from the Comelec office, however, denied the “bayad pila” at their City Hall office.

“Wala pong bayad sa pagpila o kung gusto nilang mauna sa pag-rehistro. Lalo na pong walang fixer dito sa Comelec. Nananawagan po kami sa mga nagpapa-rehistro na huwag silang magbayad sa mga taong ito na nagpapanggap na mga taga-Comelec office, o kaya po ay i-report nila sa amin. Talaga pong dagsa lamang ang nagpapa-register nitong nakaraang mga araw,” the official said.
