Clark eyed as Philippines’ next water sports destination

CLARK FREEPORT — Clark Development Corporation (CDC) President Felipe Antonio Remollo said Thursday that the state-owned firm is bent on making the Clark Freeport one of the country’s top sports destinations.
Remollo, who made the announcement during a press conference on the upcoming Sports Tourism Forum to be held at the Holiday Inn Clark on July 19, said plans are underway for the construction of a wakeboarding facility in a 10-hectare area along Clark’s Sacobia Valley.
Remollo also announced that the establishment of the wakeboarding facility must first comply with the standards imposed by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
He said since the area is within the Sacobia Valley, which is also now known as the “Clark Highlands,” the income that would be generated from the wakeboarding facility must be shared with Aetas living in the area as stipulated by the Joint Management Agreement signed by the CDC, the National Commission for Indigenous Peoples, and tribal leaders.
“The area identified for the wakeboarding project lies within ancestral lands of the Aetas; hence, any income generated from the project must be shared with them,” Remollo stressed.
He also announced that if the DENR does not approve the construction of wakeboarding facility in Sacobia, the CDC has already identified another site for the project.
The wakeboarding facility has been proposed by the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA), he added.
Remollo lauded Selracho Management Consultancy Services, which organized the Sports Tourism Forum in cooperation with the CDC and the Department of Tourism, for bringing the activity to the Clark Freeport.
“Clark has many untapped assets for sports tourism and this upcoming forum is very suitable because it presents a scientific and methodological approach to boost the local tourism industry through the conduct of various sports activities,” he said.
Remollo said sporting events like baseball, soccer, Frisbee, rugby, and cricket, among others, would be held on a monthly basis at the Clark Freeport as CDC pushes for the promotion of more sports tourism-related activities here.
He said the start of regular baseball games here was highlighted last Saturday, June 18, by sluggers from Batangas, Cebu, Manila, and Taguig teams after advancing to the semi-finals of the Baseball Philippines Series 8 held at the Parade Grounds here.
Remollo added that aside from being one of the country’s top business and investment haven, Clark also has the capacity to carve its niche in the tourism industry through sports and eco-tourism.
“One way of attracting tourists from the Asia Pacific Region is through sports tourism activities,” Remollo said.
Sports facilities will be constructed within the Freeport.
“We will use the vast area in Clark for sports events,” he said.
