Clark airport to purchase P200-M emergency trucks

CIAC President and CEO Victor Jose Luciano announced on Wednesday their plans to buy four trucks amounting to a total of some P200 million.
“You see them on televisions during emergency situation in San Francisco, USA,” said Luciano in describing the trucks. He added that the trucks “are the best in the world and they are equipped to enable its personnel to quickly penetrate the planes during emergencies and crash landings.”

Luciano said that the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), the main airport of the country, “doesn’t even have these trucks.”
Luciano’s announcement came before the actual exercises of the 3rd Air Crash Drill scheduled today (August 15) at the Clark Civil Aviation Complex.
The three-day drill kicked off on Tuesday at the Officers Club where a two-day lecture was held involving at least 400 participants.

Luciano said CIAC is required to hold a full-scale drill every two years. The first, he added, was done in 2008.
Luciano said the Aquino administration “supports the development of the Clark airport.”

He added that the President’s support “is crucial” as Clark “is now being viewed as an international airport and not just a budget airport.”
Luciano said the airlines, including Emirates, which will begin operation at the CIA on October 1, are looking into the “preparedness” of the airports in handling emergencies.

ESD head Federico Primero, Jr. said his unit has at least 58 personnel.
“The air crash drill is needed as it minimizes the effect of an emergency by saving lives and preventing costly damage to aircraft during emergency,” said Primero in his speech at the ceremony held at the Officers Club here.

Ma. Jocelyn Lim, chief of the CAAP’s Operations and Rescue Coordination Center, said the drill is necessary as the Clark airport is being prepared to handle “not just two million but five million passengers yearly.”

Luciano said there are at least one million passengers at the CIA as of this month. There were some 1.4 million passengers in 2012.
