City discourages use of ‘large’ trash cans

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — For proper waste segregation, the City Government of San Fernando is discouraging the use of large trash cans, especially in public places.
City Administrator Ferdinand Caylao announced this on Tuesday, amid queries from folks of the “disappearance” of trash cans around the city.
“It encourages mixed garbage disposal and goes contrary to the segregation program we are now strictly implementing,” he said. Caylao told Sun.Star Pampanga that the city’s “Segregate, Now Na!” campaign is being implemented at the household level.
“We are encouraging our constituents to instead start segregation at the household level. For instance, the biodegradable waste could be buried for composting and the recyclables sold. For commercial establishments, somebody buys the recyclables from them. That is why we discourage, as much as possible, the use and donation of big trash cans. We just end up with mixed, unsegregated waste,” he said.
But Caylao said that in offices, trash cans for biodegradable, non-biodegradable and recyclables are allowable, like bins spotted by Sun.Star Pampanga at the City Council offices. The same classified trash cans were noted at Capitol recently.
“Segregation means savings for us. Through that, only minimal residual waste is brought to our materials recovery facility in Barangay Lara. There, the waste is bailed and brought to Kalangitan. From our barangays, final segregation is done by our people. We at Barangay San Agustin, for instance, have a day for segregation regularly where even agricultural waste, as another batch, is put into good use,” he added.
For his part, City Planning Officer Fernando Limbitco said the end result by far will answer Kalangitan’s query on the now low tonnage of garbage being brought from the city to the sanitary landfill.
“They have been asking us why kokonti na lang ang dinadala natin doon. It’s because of our effective solid waste management program and proper segregation,” he quipped.
